Utilizing Dashboards to Drive Infection Prevention Workflow in a Hospital System

Session Description: In an Infection Prevention (IP) environment, there’s a range of data including hand hygiene, concerning infection rates, environmental findings, and disinfection events. The Infection Preventionists perform, collect, and rely on data daily as an element of their standard work. However, collection of elements alone does not help drive IP work. Translating data into customizable dashboards with the ability to drill down to the granular level allows team members to visualize the vast amounts of infection control information. The team is then able to identify gaps and deliver actionable decisions that will drive results to achieve the organization’s deliverables.
Dashboards are common across healthcare systems and are vital for showcasing high level priority outcomes. Development and utilization of dedicated IP dashboards can enhance the team’s knowledge and awareness of performance measures and assist in engagement across a healthcare system. In comparison to static reports, dashboards are interactive and dynamic, allowing end users to view changes in data performance in real-time. A dynamic coordinated dashboard also aids in the communication of timely outcomes to a broad group of stakeholders easily and promotes transparency outside of IP to assist in improvement work throughout an organization.
This education session will showcase a collection of dashboards developed for an IP team in a large hospital system and demonstrate the importance of translating data visually. Focused on highlighting the use among teams, this session will provide an overview of IP related dashboards, review of IP metrics that can be incorporated into the build phase and improve IP’s understanding of operationalizing dashboards for meaningful use.
