Session Description: Implementation of a robust antibiotic stewardship program is a complex undertaking. To help address the difficulties Pennsylvania long-term care facilities (LTCFs) were experiencing, Patient Safety Authority (PSA) staff developed and presented a 10-month antibiotic stewardship webinar series. This project focused on the basics of antibiotic stewardship and introduced the participants to the evidenced-based practices associated with improved antibiotic use. The project provided participants with education and tools to improve stewardship processes within their facilities. The participants were offered education, tools, and expert resources from PSA’s Infection Preventionist Analysts with the opportunity for in-person visits. A survey of Pennsylvania LTC facilities was done to evaluate the status of antibiotic stewardship practices within the facilities and to assess the perceived benefit of the webinar series.
The presenters will discuss the status of antibiotic stewardship implementation in Pennsylvania LTC facilities, barriers encountered, and review the tools and education offered to the facilities to help achieve success in implementing or improving their antibiotic stewardship program.
