Mary Cole RN, MS, CNRN, CCRM, SCRN, CIC has more than 30 years of nursing experience within the University of Rochester Medical System in critical care and long-term care. Mary is currently the infection control specialist / project manager at the Highlands at Brighton, a 145 bed skilled nursing facility in Brighton, NY. She has worked at the Highlands at Brighton in various capacities for over 20 years
Mary completed her BSN at Alfred University in 1991 and her MS in organizational management from Roberts Wesleyan University in 1999.
Mary has always been drawn towards complex patient care situations; hence, the unique blend of infection prevention, long-term care, and critical care. Her current focus is changing the dialogue regarding long-term care. Mary is currently an adjunct clinical instructor for the Wegmans School of Nursing at St John Fisher University. This role allows her to expose student nurses to the distinctive variety of patient populations and community health needs in long-term care.
Mary is actively involved with APIC, Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology, through service on the local chapter board and the national member services committee. She has also been involved in various ad hoc projects with the CDC, the emerging infections program, APIC, and CBIC (Certification Board of Infection Control). She strives to help shape the future of infection prevention in long-term care.
She is actively involved in bringing research initiatives and advancing technology in long-term care settings through collaboration with professional societies and industry.
