Elevating, Developing, and Retaining Infection Preventionists: A Strategic Plan and Residency

Session Description: We will be presenting a novel approach of how a national healthcare system supports the professional development, growth and elevation of their Infection Preventionists. In recognizing the complex challenges facing Infection Preventionist today, a strategic plan was put in place. This plan provides a structured approach to support the career progression of the Infection Preventionist that can be implemented in any setting. There are three pillars identified within the strategic plan; each pillar includes specific tactics and strategies. These strategies aim to increase the knowledge and skills of the infection preventionist by providing easily accessible resources, applicable experiences, and direct mentorship.
We will highlight one strategy that addresses a gap identified with variation in the onboarding and training of new staff across the system. As part of the pillar to retain and foster the development of the next generation of Infection Preventionists, the Infection Prevention Residency program was developed. This unique program provides a standard curriculum for the training of novice professionals, while also creating a foundation of practice to ensure consistency across the system for all Infection Preventionists.
We will highlight how the Infection Prevention Residency program was developed, the key topics included, and the tools created to assist with onboarding and orientation.
This session is applicable to a range of Infection Preventionists, from an early learner to an experienced leader.
