Rashida Khalid, MSHA, RN, CIC, serves as the Infection Prevention Manager at Cooper Green Mercy Health Services Authority, an affiliate of the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Health System. With over 25 years of experience in infection prevention, Rashida has demonstrated expertise in implementing best practices to safeguard patients across diverse healthcare settings.
For the past 16 years, Rashida has played a pivotal role as the vascular access coordinator at UAB, a prominent academic medical center boasting over 1100 beds. Her dedication shines through her focused efforts on preventing bloodstream-associated infections, particularly those linked to peripheral and central vascular access devices. Rashida's commitment to excellence led her to spearhead the development of the PLABSI (Peripheral Line-Associated Bloodstream Infection) definition in 2019, tailored specifically for internal surveillance at UAB. Rooted in the National Healthcare Safety Network’s (NHSN) guidelines for Central Line-Associated Bloodstream Infections (CLABSI), her innovative approach underscores her proactive stance in enhancing patient safety.
Beyond her institutional contributions, Rashida has been an active member of her local APIC (Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology) chapter, holding various leadership roles. Her passion for infection prevention is palpable, as she embraces the dynamic nature of her field, tackling new challenges with enthusiasm each day.
