Alvernita McKinney is a skilled and experienced Registered Nurse who has dedicated 21 years to serving in the healthcare industry. Her career started over two decade ago with a background in Cardiovascular Surgery at the University of Alabama Hospital (UAB). With an unwavering commitment to improving healthcare outcomes, Alvernita transitioned to the Birmingham VA Medical Center, where she assumed the role of Infection Preventionist for six years. In this capacity, she was pivotal in safeguarding patients and staff from infectious diseases, implementing protocols, and fostering a culture. Driven by her desire to effect broader change in healthcare systems, Ms. McKinney returned to UAB Hospital as an Infection Prevention Manager. Over her seven years in this leadership role, she has implemented innovative strategies to enhance infection control practices, ensuring the highest patient safety and quality care standards.
Ms. McKinney's impact transcends the confines of her workplace, as evidenced by her active involvement in professional organizations. In 2023, she was honored to serve as the President of the Alabama chapter of the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC AL), where she spearheaded initiatives to promote best practices in infection prevention across the state.
