Project Management Principles for Effective Infection Prevention Project Implementation

Session Description: Infection preventionists are frequently tasked with establishing and managing projects ranging from outbreak response plans to the implementation of new processes and workflows directly impacting patient care. The leadership skills, organizational ability, attention to detail and problem-solving aptitude of many infection preventionists make them well positioned to succeed in these informal project manager roles. However, without formal project management training it can be a daunting task to know where to begin and how to sustain a project.

Project management principles provide a structured and systematic approach to planning, executing and controlling projects. The benefits of establishing clear goals, tasks, deadlines and metrics are that projects are implemented intentionally, with enhance collaboration and transparency and with the flexibility to pivot when challenges are encountered.

By combining their expertise in project management and infection prevention, the speakers in this session will provide project management basics to empower infection preventionist to take the lead on project implementation and management. The speakers will share their experiences and challenges in implementing an enhanced environmental cleaning technology at their acute healthcare academic facility. Speakers will share lessons learnt and successes of the project and partnership.
