New York Presbyterian Hospital
Jona Caparas, MSN, RN VA-BC is an experienced Registered Nurse with a Master of Science in Nursing and a Vascular Access/IV Therapy RN at the New York Presbyterian Hospital. She has over 30 years of nursing experience, with thirty of those years being focused on infusion therapy in various settings such as radiology, oncology/bone marrow transplants, orthopedics, and pediatrics. Jona is also the Vice-Chair of the hospital's Shared Governance and a member of its Safety and Quality Committees. In her spare time, she provides education on picc/midlines, ugpiv, and standard piv insertion, as well as care and maintenance of these devices. She implemented the first Rapid Response Team in a Long-Term Care Facility and is an active member of several nursing organizations, including the Association of Vascular Access, New York State Nurses Association, and the Board of Director of the Philippine Nurses Association-NY, Inc. Furthermore, Jona is the co-founder and President of the Association for Vascular Access New York Metro Network (AVANY). She has published several articles and abstract posters, and her research on midline catheters has significantly impacted the medical field. An abstract article she published spurred manufacturers to improve existing midline catheters and develop new ones. Hospitals began using midlines more frequently to reduce the need for central line placements, thereby minimizing associated complications.
