Stuck on Mute? Organize and Prioritize Virtual Team Communication

Session Description: Continuous improvement work and dissemination of information within Infection Prevention teams is necessary for the health and safety of patients. In a large healthcare system where Infection Preventionists are logistically spread across several counties, clear and concise communication is essential.
Incorporating kaizen culture methodologies is an efficient way to unite team members who meet virtually. A component of kaizen culture, the Managing for Daily Improvement (MDI) board is a tool that has been successfully utilized on clinical units in healthcare settings. Development of a virtual MDI board for groups separated physically creates an environment of inclusiveness and unity. This also provides a platform for team priorities to be shared visibly and in an organized manner. The methodical process of walking through the board allows for dissemination of information that the team specifically prioritizes, such as key performance indicators.
This session will inform Infection Preventionists about kaizen culture and MDI concepts. Building upon these concepts, participants will be introduced to a model virtual MDI board. The steps taken to implement and operationalize this process will be discussed, with the goal to improve communication and awareness of improvement work among virtual teams.
